“To me, teamwork is the beauty of our sport, where you have five acting as one. You become selfless.”
–Mike Krzyzewski
Team 1 is on the ground in Honduras and the “selfless” work has just begun. When you are asked to be Team 1 on a Finish the Work project you take on a special role that affects all the teams that come behind. What you may find on day 1 could be a little of everything.
Pre-work begins a few months before team 1 arrives when local laborers and craftsmen are selected to finish certain tasks before the project starts. This could be pouring a cement floor, putting a roof on, building a block wall or anything that would help the teams make a smoother start.
Sometimes the plans for pre-work go smoothly and the building is just as you envisioned it in the planning phase of the project. But more often than not…team 1 has to be extremely flexible and have an “it is what it is” attitude on the first day. Organizing materials, revising the plan, undoing things that may have been done in error and laying the groundwork and sequence of the tasks that each team will accomplish…are just a few things they will be faced with this week.
Pray for Team 1…a team mostly from Hendersonville, NC, highly skilled and driven by a desire to serve God and love others. They don’t like to take breaks, they tolerate excursions to relax and enjoy the culture, and their “Git-R-Done” attitude produces lots of positive results. Pray they will rest when needed, smell the roses along the way, and finish the week in good health!
